The seller restored the Skyline Restaurant and the buyer added something too. The result is a beautiful preservation of a dearly loved Parkdale landmark. Here’s what they did and how they did it. WATCHthe sign flash again (on a large screen).
The Skyline Restaurant at 1426 Queen St W 2016, lovingly restored and enhanced. Click on this picture, on a large screen, to see the Skyline flash again.
1996 photo of 1426 Queen St W, was provided by the Parkdale BIA. Notice that on the tops of the two buildings to the left of the Skyline, the Cornices were more in tact then. Our heritage heeds help to survive.
1426 Queen St W, lot 8, is Romanesque Revival with raised red brick arches, decorated keystones, raised pilasters, rusticated stone lentils, and a decorative stone cornice, painted brown since 1996, at the top of the building. (Please don't paint stone.) This architectural style echoes Toronto's Old City Hall and Queens Park, perhaps foreshadowing to annexation by Toronto. 'Skyline Restaurant' is itself a piece of history, having been open since the 1970s. The Skyline is dearly loved by locals.
Maggie Ruhl, 1426 Queen St W Skyline June 8 2016. Hi jack, A bit about us. Jud and I are brother and sister. This is our first place together. Jud owns The Three Speed and The Wallflower as well, and I was co owner of The Ace and Dakota Tavern up until 2014. We both live in Parkdale and used to go Skyline. It was such a beautiful place so we jumped on the opportunity to take it over. We simply wanted to restore it and bring out the beautiful features of the restaurant. Louie, the previous owner, kept it in really great shape. He is a friend and supporter of the new Skyline. As far as the food is concerned we were inspired by classic diner food and just wanted to use fresh local ingredients to elevate it a bit. We brought in Chef Peter Ramsay, formerly of Geraldine and Cowbell, to help with this. We want to offer something for everyone so diner fans will be happy with the Skyline special club sandwich, our in house ground burgers and all day breakfast. We also offer daily fish specials, steak and pasta of the day to cater to those that want more sophisticated cuisine. We are open every day from 11am-4pm for lunch & 5-11pm for dinner. Brunch Sat & Sunday 10-4 & dinner 5-11. Drinks till 2 Wed-Sat. Let me know if you have any more questions. Thanks, Maggie Sent from my iPhone
ToBlog reports "Parkdale residents have no need to fret; new owners Jud and Maggie Ruhl want to keep the spirit of the old-school diner intact. The brother and sister team have never owned a business together, but Jud is part owner at 3 Speed and Wallflower and Maggie opened The Ace and the Dakota Tavern. Their vision for The Skyline includes modest improvements to the interior and a reverential approach to the menu." http://www.blogto.com/restaurants/skyline
The upgrade of the Skyline Restaurant is part of Parkdale's long awaited recovery from a long slump brought on after the Gardiner Expressway in 1956, that severed the bridge from Queen and Roncesvalles to the lake shore and paved over the lakefront community, along with Sunnyside Amusement Park.
For a half century Parkdale has been home to low income Canadians, including immigrants, thementally ill, poor, first nations, survivors of broken homes as well as history lovers and artists. In the same community are affluent single family homes. Parkdale is diversity. Not everyone is happy about what is seen as gentrification.
I recall standing at the cash about 1975 with my mentally ill mother, who lived in Parkdale because of it's support services.
At this bar, years ago Mike met Doris. He fell fast in love but the competition for Doris was stiff. Mike left a huge tip, putting his competition on notice and declaring his interest. They are still together. Doris was a waitress at the Skyline Restaurant for about 40 years.
New and old blend seamlessly.
This is history preserved.
Wall paintings from a friend at the Ace on Roncie.
Improved space at the back in full retro style.
This screen grab of article by www.blogto.com. The Skyline has had many positive reviews.
This on line listing indicates that the renovations were completed by the sellers. This is a novel and very successful approach to preservation. I understand the paintings in the back room were contributed by friends of the buyers.
